I am writing to ask that Wimbledon immediately ends its partnership with Barclays, which is bankrolling arms companies supplying weapons used in Israel’s assault on Palestinians.
Barclays is financing arms companies supplying Israel with the weapons and military technology it is using in its attacks on Palestinians.
Israel’s ongoing bombardment and ground invasion of the besieged Gaza Strip has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, a sizable proportion of whom are children. 90% of Gaza’s population have been displaced, many of whom have been displaced multiple times. Nowhere in Gaza is safe; entire residential neighbourhoods have been levelled, UN schools sheltering the displaced, and hospitals treating the wounded, have been targeted. Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war, with the Director-General of the World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reporting last week that “a significant proportion of Gaza’s population is now facing catastrophic hunger and famine-like conditions.”
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the world’s supreme inter-statal court, has ruled it plausible that Israel is committing genocidal acts in its assault on Palestinians in Gaza. In issuing its ruling, the ICJ ordered a set of legally binding interim measures to prevent further genocidal acts against Palestinians. Israel has refused to comply with the court’s orders.
In addition, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has applied for arrest warrants for Israeli leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Given the severity of Israel’s assault, the UN Human Rights Council, alongside international human rights organisations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called for all states to impose an immediate arms embargo on Israel.
Despite this, Barclays is continuing to finance companies which are arming Israel’s assault. Research released last month by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Campaign Against Arms Trade and War on Want found that Barclays now invests over £2billion in, and provides £6.1billion in financial services to, nine arms companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in its attacks.
Barclays is facing growing pressure over its unethical financial ties. Just last week, festival organiser Live Nation ended its sponsorship deal with Barclays after hundreds of artists and bands withdrew from Barclays sponsored music festivals. Moreover, this year alone, over 3000 former customers have closed their Barclays accounts because of the bank’s complicity in Israel's human rights abuses. Continuing your partnership with Barclays is not only unethical, it could lead to severe reputational damage to Wimbledon.
By accepting Barclays sponsorship, you are allowing the bank to use tennis to try boost its image, and hide from accountability for its role in enabling Israel’s war crimes.
I am therefore asking that Wimbledon immediately ends its partnership with Barclays.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
