UNHRC votes

On Friday the UK will vote at the UN Human Rights Council on a number of important resolutions. Last year the Government disgracefully abstained or voted against a number of resolutions, and instead used its position in the UNHRC to shield Israel from accountability. We need to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Dear Secretary of State, Now is not the time for the UK to play politics with Palestinian lives by abstaining or voting against UNHRC resolutions at the end of this week. The situation in Palestine has never been worse. Illegal settlements are expanding faster than ever, the Nation State Law has enshrined apartheid into Israel’s constitution, and Israel continues to violate international law with apparent impunity. On Monday the UNHRC independent Commission of Inquiry released an extremely thorough and forensic 252 page report into the Great March of Return. It is absolutely clear that Israeli forces have committed violations of international law that may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. Among the key findings of the report are: - Israeli forces deliberately shot children, medics, journalists, and disabled people. - Israeli forces killed and maimed Palestinian demonstrators who did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury to others when they were shot, nor were they directly participating in hostilities. - Contrary to the official narrative of the Israeli Government, the Great March of Return demonstrations have been civilian in nature. It is essential that this report is taken seriously, its recommendations implemented, and for the international community to hold all parties that violate international law accountable for their actions. At a time when the US has abandoned Palestinians, there is a strong need for international support. The UK needs to carefully consider the kind of message it will be sending to both Israel and Palestine as it votes at the UNHRC this week. Given the seriousness of the Commission of Inquiry report into the brutal Israeli attacks on demonstrators in Gaza, it would be outrageous for the UK to not support the Accountability resolution. Such a vote would only reinforce a belief of Israeli impunity and encourage further violations of international law. With this in mind, I implore the UK to think carefully ahead of votes at the UNHRC this week, and vote in favour of all resolutions protecting palestinian rights within international law.
