Dear Mayor Sadiq Khan,
In September 2025, DSEI, one of the world’s largest arms fairs, is scheduled to return to the Excel Centre in London. At DSEI, deadly weapons and military technology will be marketed to representatives of human rights abusing states, including Israel.
You have previously outlined your opposition to DSEI due to its role in perpetuating human rights abuses. In 2021, your election manifesto committed to explore “all possible options to end it being hosted in the city.” Your opposition to the arms fair has been welcome, and I am writing to ask you to act on this pledge to prevent DSEI being hosted in London next year.
DSEI will see London play host to delegations from a range of human rights abusing states, who will meet with representatives of arms companies producing weapons and military technology being used in human rights abuses around the world.
This includes representatives of the Israeli military, who have attended previous iterations of the arms fair, including with a dedicated pavilion. Israel’s ongoing bombardment and ground invasion of the besieged Gaza Strip has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, a sizable proportion of whom are children. 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, most of them multiple times. The International Court of Justice, the world’s supreme inter-statal court, has ruled it plausible that Israel is committing genocidal acts in its assault on Palestinians in Gaza.
Why are representatives of a state on trial for genocide at the world court being welcomed to London to do business with arms dealers profiting from the sale of lethal weaponry?
The fair will host a number of arms companies producing weapons and military technology used by Israel in its attacks on Palestinians. This includes Elbit Systems, which supplies the Israeli military with armoured drones, bombs and artillery shells. It also includes General Dynamics, a US company which produces metal bodies for the MK-80 bomb series, one of the primary aerial munitions Israel has used to bomb Gaza.
The UN Human Rights Council, the highest human rights body of the UN, has demanded that all states impose an arms embargo on Israel, as called for by Palestinian civil society for decades. This call is echoed by hundreds of human rights organisations, including Save the Children and Amnesty International.
Many Londoners, from all backgrounds, care deeply about human rights. Many Palestinians call London their home— some have experienced first-hand the genocidal violence inflicted by the Israeli military or watched in horror as it has impacted their families and friends. As their representative, you must do everything in your power to stop an event contributing to the violence that they and their community face. Ending this heinous event must be at the top of your agenda.
I’m asking you to take the following actions to prevent DSEI from taking place:
- Write to the event organisers on behalf of residents of the City, to ask that the event is cancelled.
- Use your position to publicly speak out against the fair.
- Tell the Excel Centre that no GLA or Mayoral events will be held there while it continues to host DSEI.
- Meet with campaigning groups working to oppose the fair to discuss further actions you can take to ensure the event does not go ahead.
