The Royal Academy of Arts have disgracefully removed artworks by young artists challenging Israel’s genocidal violence against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

We cannot let the Royal Academy get away with shielding the state of Israel from accountability for its war crimes. Their actions help to cover up Israel’s ongoing atrocities and serve to dehumanise Palestinian people and erase their history and experiences.

<p class="MsoNormal">Dear Axel Rüger, Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts,</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I am writing to you to express my deep concern over the decision you have taken to censor artworks by young artists who are responding to Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The actions you have taken have directly resulted in the stigmatisation of young artists at early stages of their careers. One of the works you have removed was a photograph of a protestor at a Palestine solidarity demonstration with a placard reading, “Jews Say Stop Genocide on Palestinians. Not In Our Name”. It is important to note that at every national march for Palestine, there has been a sizeable Jewish bloc demanding an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israel’s genocide. By removing this work, you have contributed to the attempts to erase Jewish solidarity with Palestine.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In silencing solidarity for Palestine, the Royal Academy is complicit in shielding the state of Israel from accountability for its actions, recognised by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a plausible case of genocide. The ICJ has also made clear the illegality of Israel’s 57 year long occupation of Palestinian land in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, confirming the judgement of numerous human rights monitoring bodies including Amnesty International, that Israel is practising the crime of apartheid.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">All cultural institutions have an obligation not to be complicit in the commission of these grave war crimes. They should resist all pressure exerted by pro-Israel groups to silence artists addressing the truths of the oppression of the Palestinian people in their work. Nor should it be regarded as inherently illegitimate for artists to draw comparisons between one genocide and others in history. Your decision to remove these artworks violates your duty to uphold freedom of expression, and contributes to the dehumanisation of Palestinian people and the erasure of the facts of their history.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I would like a full explanation as to how you will rectify the harm you have caused.</p>
