Dear Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP,
CC: Minister of State, Karin Smyth MP,
I am writing to raise my profound concerns about the award of a £330million contract to US Palantir to develop and maintain the NHS Federated Data Platform to centralise patient medical data.
Given Palantir’s role in enabling grave human rights abuses, I am calling on you to step in to cancel the contract for the platform.
Palantir has developed surveillance and AI technology used as an integral part of Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip, and its unlawful military occupation in the West Bank.
In January 2024, the company entered into a “strategic partnership” with Israel’s Ministry of Defence to develop technology and tools to be used in “war-related missions.” This technology has been used to accelerate Israel’s genocide in Gaza, by using AI technology for its bombing This has allowed the Israeli military to develop, in the words of one former military officer, a “mass assassination factory”.
It is extremely concerning that the NHS has awarded this contract to a company that provides direct assistance to Israel to carry out a devastating military assault which has killed many tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and led to Israel facing trial for genocide at the International Court of Justice, with its leaders subject to arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Palantir also provides technology used as part of Israel’s surveillance apparatus in the illegally occupied West Bank. Palestinians face constant and invasive observation and monitoring leading to restricted movement, and arbitrary arrest and detention. Amnesty International describes this surveillance as forming “part of a coercive environment aimed at forcing Palestinians to leave areas of strategic interest to Israeli authorities, by making their ordinary lives unbearable.”
Palantir executives have boasted about the company’s role in enabling state violence. Its CEO, Alex Karp, said on an investor call earlier this year that “Palantir is here to disrupt” including “to scare our enemies and, on occasion, kill them.” Such a company is clearly unsuitable to handle our sensitive medical data.
This company, which has close ties to the US Trump administration, is not an ethical or trustworthy partner for our health service. As someone who uses the NHS, I do not want my health data handled by this company.
Given Palantir’s track record, it is unlikely any data privacy safeguards imposed would be respected by the company. Health worker and patient groups have repeatedly spoken out the decision to award Palantir the contract. If the rollout goes ahead, it risks damaging vital public trust in the health service.
Please confirm that you will step in and revoke the contract.
