Dear Foreign Secretary, You will have heard of Israel’s extrajudicial shooting of Palestinians protesting within Gaza last week. According to latest reports at least 18 people have been killed by Israeli army snipers and 1,400 more injured. 773 unarmed Palestinians were shot. By any reasonable consideration this is a disproportionate response to a democratic protest against an illegal siege and occupation.
As Foreign Secretary, I call on you to condemn Israel’s actions and support an independent investigation into last Friday's events. Israel must be held accountable for such blatant violations of international law. I also call upon you to take immediate action to bring about an end of Israel's siege of Gaza (which is illegal as a form of collective punishment), and to move UK policy to a position where we stop arming Israel with weapons used against Palestinians.
According to UN reports Gaza is on the edge of a humanitarian crisis – not one caused by nature, but by the deliberate actions of the state of Israel to punish the civilian population of Gaza. Today is Palestinian Land Day – commemorating the Palestinian citizens of Israel who were killed in 1976 to enforce the seizure of their land in order to make way for the building of settlements. On May 15 it will be 70 years since the Nakba – the catastrophe when over 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their own land.
It is time for the British Government to fulfil its historic obligations and lead pressure to bring about the end of the military occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem – which the Government recognises is illegal under international law, and secure the freedom of Palestine.
