The situation in East Jerusalem is unteneable as the Israeli state is scaling up the attacks, the tension and the hatred against Palestinians in the city.

We must do all we can to ensure our Government uses every tool at its disposal to end Israel's impunity.

Please write to the Foreign Secretary today, and urge him to take action to support new action at the UN to end Israel's incitement and violence against the residents of East Jerusalem.

Dear Mr Hammond  I am writing to ask you to take urgent action regarding occupied East Jerusalem.
I am sure you are aware that for the first time since 1967, the Al-Aqsa Mosque was closed on 30 October. You will no doubt know that the tension in Jerusalem is incredibly high, following the Jerusalem Mayor’s entering Al Aqsa without any consultation with the religious leaders responsible for the holy site, and the forced night-time settlements by political settlers in occupied East Jerusalem. There has been heavy use of weaponry of various kinds against unarmed protestors. There is no doubt that Israel’s incitement and violence have and will make disturbances and tragedy more likely.  
Following the shooting of Israeli right-wing extremist Yehudah Glick, Mu’taz Hijazi was declared a suspect, and killed without charge or trial. The Israeli authorities announced that they would destroy Hijazi’s home on 31 October – an act of collective punishment against his family. Jeff Halper from the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, commented that ‘"Israel stopped punitive demolitions in 2005 because the army itself decided that they are counter-productive and simply inflame the situation. The reappearance of punitive demolitions like this is simply atavistic revenge: it is entirely primitive, and there is no rationale for it. It will not contribute to calming the situation – and of course it is illegal under both international and Israeli law.’
I know that you are also aware that the Israeli PM has ordered plans for another 1000 settlements in East Jerusalem to be advanced. I welcome your words to parliament on 28 October:  ‘The settlements are illegal and building them is intended to undermine the prospects of the peace process. We must not allow that to happen’. These need to be followed up by action.
I am therefore calling for you to:
<ul>
<li>Outline what measures the government will be taking against Israel’s settlement expansion.</li>
<li>Summon the Israeli ambassador to tell him that Israel must immediately end its provocative actions, abide by international law, and respect Palestinian human rights.</li>
<li>Support measures at UN Security Council and other international bodies to defend Palestinian rights.</li>
</ul>
