Stop the Liverpool Arms Fair!

In October, the AOC Europe 2021 arms fair is scheduled to be held in Liverpool. Arms companies whose weapons have been used to oppress civilian populations around the world, including in Palestine, will attend the fair.

Over 8000 e-mails have been sent to the directors of the council-owned ACC Exhibition Centre, demanding they revoke permission for the event.

Now, e-mail Liverpool City Mayor Joanne Anderson, and ask her to take robust action to ensure the event does not go ahead.

Dear Mayor Anderson,
I am writing in regard to the AOC Europe 2021 fair scheduled to take place at the ACC Exhibition Centre in October. As you will know, there is widespread opposition to the fair in Liverpool and beyond. In just the past week, over 8,000 e-mails have been sent to the Directors of the ACC, urging them to abandon the event
At the fair arms merchants, whose weapons have been used to target civilian populations around the world, are due to use Liverpool to market and sell their arms and military technology. It is extremely disappointing that, after the fair’s cancellation last year, policies were not implemented to ensure such an unethical event could not return.
One of the fair’s attendees is listed as Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest private weapons manufacturer. Elbit weaponry has been used repeatedly to target the civilian population of the besieged Gaza strip. <a href="https://whoprofits.org/company/elbit-systems/">85% of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used by the Israeli military are manufactured by Elbit</a>. Just this May, Israel began yet another ceaseless bombardment of the population of the besieged enclave, killing over 260 Palestinians, over a quarter of them children.
In addition, a range of companies supplying Saudi Arabia with weapons and military technology are due to be present this October, including MDBA, which supplies missiles to the RSAF.  The Saudi-led coalition’s intervention in Yemen has contributed heavily to the man-made humanitarian catastrophe unfolding. <a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2015/09/yemen-the-forgotten-war/">At least 20,000 civilians have been killed since March 2015.</a> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/21/yemen-young-children-dead-starvation-disease-save-the-children">A report by Save the Children</a> in 2018 estimated that 85,000 children have starved to death since the war began.  
While I was glad to see your statement opposing the fair, I do not feel you have taken sufficient action to ensure the fair does not take place, given the City Council’s ownership of the ACC Exhibition Centre.
Therefore, I am writing to ask you to take several actions:
<ul>
<li>Write publicly to Clarion Events and AOC Europe 2021, telling them their event is unwelcome in the City, and that they should abandon the event. </li>
<li>Write publicly, as owners of the ACC, to push the Directors of the venue to revoke permission for the event.</li>
<li>Join demonstrations opposing the fair on 11th September, and in the run up to the fair.</li>
</ul>
