Tell the Co-op to stop selling Israeli goods

Last month, the Co-op's AGM voted overwhelmingly for a motion to "cease all trading with Israel" and to take "all Israeli products off the shelves”. The Co-op's leadership must implement this motion by ending the sale of Israeli goods in Co-op stores.

Write to the Co-op's leadership to call for the motion to be implemented without delay.

I am writing with reference to the motion passed overwhelmingly at the Co-op’s AGM in May, which calls for the Co-op to cease all trading with Israel. I am calling on the Co-op board to implement this motion by ending the sale of all Israeli goods in Co-op stores without delay.Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has killed many tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and driven the entire population to the brink of starvation. Nearly 18 months ago, the International Court of Justice, the world court, ruled that there is plausible evidence that Israel is in breach of the Genocide Convention in its assault on Gaza. Israel has refused to abide by any of the binding interim measures issued by the court. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.It is incumbent on all of us to do everything in our power to bring Israel’s grave violations of international law to an end. By ceasing trade with Israel, the Co-op would be refusing to provide any economic support to Israel while it carries out a genocide in Gaza, and maintains a system of apartheid against all Palestinians.Since 2012, the Co-op has rightly committed to refuse to “engage with any supplier of produce known to be sourcing from the Israeli settlements” in the illegally occupied West Bank.  However, this existing policy does not go far enough. All Israeli agricultural exporters benefit from Israel’s land theft and systematic destruction of Palestinian agriculture by exploiting the Palestinian captive market. Moreover, they contribute tax revenue to the Israeli state, which in turn helps it fund its crimes against Palestinians.The Co-op has always stood out from other supermarkets by being at the forefront of ethical trade and human rights. The Co-op must continue to stand on the right side of history by ending all trade with Israel.By enacting the will of its members, the Co-op would receive wide support from the public. Recent polling has found that 50% of people in Britain think supermarkets should boycott Israeli goods, compared to just 16% against.Please listen to your members, and the wider public, and update your sourcing policy to ensure that Co-op stores stop selling Israeli goods.
