Tell Brent Pension Fund to Divest from Human Rights Abuses

I am a Brent resident emailing to urge that Brent Pension Fund immediately commits to divesting from companies that are complicit to any degree in Israel’s military occupation, apartheid, and genocide against Palestinians.At least 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military assault on the Gaza Strip. Alarmingly, an article published in renowned medical journal ‘The Lancet’ in July 2024 estimated that the true figure could be closer to 186,000 killed. Amnesty International has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.As recent events have shown, the latest ceasefire was not the end of this historic crime, but merely a pause. In September 2024, Brent & Harrow Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) presented its divestment petition to the Council, signed by over 2,000 Brent residents, workers, students and scheme members, all demanding an end to Brent Pension Fund’s complicity in these war crimes, as several councils have already committed to do.Considering how critical the situation is, I urge you to action Brent & Harrow PSC’s six divestment asks, as presented to the Pension Sub-Committee in February 2025, without further delay, as follows:<ol><li class="MsoNormal">Publish a full list of direct and indirect investment holdings, for transparency.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Commit to not invest in companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in violations of human rights, whether directly or indirectly.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Conduct a review of investments to ensure compliance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which are more meaningful and less vague than the UN PRI.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Make an immediate public commitment to begin divestment from arms companies supplying weapons used in human rights abuses as an important first step. (We understand that divestment itself is a longer process.)</li><li class="MsoNormal">Use the position of Brent LGPS as a ‘Partner Fund’ of the London Collective Investment Vehicle (CIV) to urge that its new ethical fund, the PEPPA Value fund, does not contain investments in companies enabling human rights abuses, and divests its existing funds from such companies.</li><li class="MsoNormal">Provide regular meetings and updates to Brent & Harrow PSC. </li></ol>I ask that you make my voice heard in the Council, and initiate these key actions without delay. I eagerly await your responses.
