I am writing in advance of the FIFA Congress on 15 May 2025 to ask that you push for Israel to be banned from FIFA, in line with FIFA’s obligations not to be complicit in Israel’s genocide, military occupation and apartheid against Palestinians.Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed many tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, including many hundreds of Palestinian footballers. It has annihilated Gaza’s footballing infrastructure such as stadiums, training facilities and pitches.In 2023, Yarmouk Stadium, one of the oldest football stadiums in Gaza was heavily bombed and turned into a makeshift mass detention and torture centre by Israel. Abdulrahman, an 11 year old Palestinian child who was imprisoned in the stadium <a href="https://www.dci-palestine.org/_they_were_trying_to_exterminate_us_palestinian_children_in_gaza_tortured_by_the_israeli_military">described</a> to Defence for Children International-Palestine how Israeli forces “released dogs on us to scare me, beat me on the head, and stripped me of my clothes.” He further outlined that “the soldiers fired shots over our heads and insulted us. We sat in the middle of Al-Yarmouk Stadium all night with our heads between our legs, surrounded by dogs, soldiers, and tanks. It represents football teams based in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank. These football clubs are part of the infrastructure that underpins Israel’s colonisation and military occupation of Palestinian land.In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the world court, affirmed that Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian land is illegal in its entirety. It also found Israel in breach of the prohibition on apartheid. As a result of the ruling, international organisations are under an obligation not to recognize or assist Israel’s illegal military presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. FIFA must take urgent action to ban the Israel Football Association.FIFA has continually failed to live up to its obligations to ban Israel. It has ignored and sidelined the voices of Palestinian organisations, including the Palestinian Football Association, who are clear that the Israel Football Association must be banned.This FIFA Congress must be a turning point.
