Our new research has uncovered that Barclays has substantially increased its financing of arms companies producing weapons used Israel's assault on Palestinians. The bank now invests over £2billion in, and provides £6.1billion in financials services to, arms companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in its attacks.

I am writing in regard to <a href="https://palestinecampaign.org/wp-content/uploads/Barclays-report-May-2024-v3-FINAL.pdf">research </a>released in May 2024 by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, War on Want and Campaign Against Arms Trade identifying that Barclays has increased its financial ties to companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used in its attacks on Palestinians.

I will not use any Barclays service until the bank ends its financial ties with companies supplying weapons and military technology to Israel. 
Israel’s ongoing bombardment and ground invasion of the besieged Gaza Strip has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, a sizable proportion of whom are children. 90% of Gaza’s population have been displaced, many of whom have been displaced multiple times. Nowhere in Gaza is safe; entire residential neighbourhoods have been levelled, UN schools sheltering the displaced, and hospitals treating the wounded, have been targeted.

By blocking humanitarian aid, targeting life-sustaining infrastructure, as well as humanitarian convoys, Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war. Palestinians in Gaza are now facing imminent famine.  As of 1 April 2024, 32 Palestinians, including 28 children, have died of malnutrition and dehydration at hospitals in northern Gaza.

The International Court of Justice, the world’s supreme inter-statal court, has ruled it plausible that Israel is committing genocidal acts in its assault on Palestinians in Gaza.

Given the severity of Israel’s assault, the UN Human Rights Council, alongside international human rights organisations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called on all states to impose an immediate arms embargo on Israel.

Despite the unfolding atrocities committed against the Palestinian people, Barclays has substantially increased its financial ties with companies supplying Israel with the weapons and military technology it uses to carry out its attacks. This includes more than doubling its investment in Elbit Systems since July 2021. Elbit Systems supplies armoured drones, artillery weapons and munitions used by Israeli forces. Barclays has also increased its investment in General Dynamics, which produces the gun systems that arm Israel’s fighter jets used to bomb Gaza.

Barclays has a clear responsibility to end its complicity in Israel’s unlawful attacks against Palestinians. The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which Barclays has committed to in its operations, are clear that businesses and financial institutions must take active steps to “avoid causing or contributing to adverse human rights impacts” through both their direct activity and business relationships.

It is simply unconscionable that Barclays has decided to facilitate and profit from Israel's war crimes committed against Palestinians. As a result, I will not use any Barclays service and will encourage others to do the same as a means of preventing further genocidal violence.
